Smoothies are exceptionally popular, and they’re perfect for getting a great supply of supplements in one go, particularly when you don’t have time to eat a full meal. They’re truly easy to make with just a few ingredients and a blender. The main ingredients you’ll need are fruit (or vegetables!) of your choosing and a liquid of a few sort, blend them and enjoy!
Ingredients
You may choose any fruit or veggie you want, nearly anything can be made into a smoothie. With some fruits, like bananas, you’ll get a thick drink without having to add any other thickening agent, but with other fruits, like oranges or kiwis, that contain a lot of water, you may need to incorporate something to the smoothie to help thicken it. Adding more fruit, or something else such as flax seed or protein powder may help thicken your smoothie and enhance its nutritional value as well.
The liquid depends on the other ingredients you are going to use. Milk, or “veggie milks” such as almond, coconut or soya, can all be used (choose the one you like the most). You can also add yoghurt, that gives a nice acidity that works really well with the sweetness of the fruits. Other liquids you can use are fruit juices (although juice may add too much sugar, since you’ve got a lot of sweet fruit in your smoothie already), or even tea. Green tea is a great ingredient in any smoothie, and it adds a lot of antioxidants.
How to Make a Smoothie
In all the recipes, amounts are approximate, and they may vary according to your taste and according to the fruits and vegetables you use. Some people may favor a more runny smoothie, others like smoothies so thick it may harm your jaws trying to suck it up the straw! Feel free to try and change ingredients and texture, and to add your own twist to your smoothie.
To make your smoothie, just put the chopped/sliced/peeled fruit into the jug, pour over the liquid, add any additional ingredients (such as seeds, or perhaps flavorings like vanilla essence), put on the lid, and blend: simple, delicious and nutritious.
Pro tip: Make your smoothie to drink asap. Make your smoothie as close as possible to the time you’re going to drink it, so you avoid losing any nutritional content and the ingredients don’t separate.
